ARTIST STATEMENT

Returning to my roots helps me regain my sense of self as well as express my memories thru art.  My art honors the ways of the past and those of my ancestors. My desire is to go back to a simpler time when all we had to do was meet our basic needs, using our minds and natures ingredients.

My art practice is focused on expressing the relationship between ourselves and the natural world.   I believe the disconnect between our basic primitive human state and today’s refined human condition is causing unconscious melancholy.

I construct a visual and emotional space where axiological narratives of pain and beauty intersect.  Translating my experiences and emotions into an immersive visual form helping viewers better understand themselves and the world around them.

I use a combination of paintings, drawings, writings, video performance, installation, and sculptures to become a collection of autobiographical abstractions to tell my story.  Sculpture has entered my practice as a new element, shaped from natures clay, to reflect how grief generates life.

Abstract paintings, made from naturally occurring materials and dyes, represent my memories of the pain and beauty which drive our compulsive and elusive search for happiness.

My language is color, drawing inspiration from the natural world and how color effects our feelings and understanding of the world around us.  I use the color yellow to express myself and provide my message.  The audience will, SEE yellow representing the sun which provides the basis of life itself.   HEAR the sounds of nature, SMELL the aroma of natural pigments and TOUCH nature itself, the colors used are made of natural ingredients, like marigold and turmeric powder creating the yellow.
